Mastering at Broadside - $40/hr
What is it?
Mastering is (and always has been) a mystifying process to most people. In a few words, mastering is the process of tonally and dynamically preparing a number of individual 2-track mixes to be played in the "real" world. The goal is to achieve consistent levels and equalization from track to track,
There are many ways to go-about this process. There are very expensive, high-end "Mastering Houses" packed to the gills with foreign audiophile-style gear that specialize in this process only. There are also inexperienced computer nerds with bad monitors that normalize the file, run it through the "EARTH-SHAKER" and call 'er good. We're neither. We use industry-standard editing software and dynamics processing tools through an accurate monitoring system with an experienced ear.
In short, you will hear a significant improvement in the sound quality of your music without over-processing, or killing the dynamics.
EDIT: This is the first step. Beginnings and ends of songs are cleaned-up, stick-clicks are removed etc... Any desired fade-ins/outs are added at this time as well.
EQ: Adjustments to the overall EQ are made (if necessary) to provide continuity from song to song. Harsh hi's and troublesome lo's can be tamed - other frequencies can be adjusted to enhance certain elements of the mix if desired.
DYNAMIC TREATMENT: After general clean-up, we use WAVES Plug-ins to treat the material with the necessary dynamic processing (compression) and level maximization. The end result is a cleaner, punchier and yes, louder finished product.
SONG SPACING: Next, we import the finished files and set the song order and spacing between each track.
BURN: The final master CD is burned.
